The National Student Financial Aid Scheme, NSFAS is a government student financial aid scheme that is given to poor undergraduate students in South Africa to assist them to pay for the cost of their tertiary education after completing high school. To be eligible for NSFAS funding – an applicant must be a South African citizen, come from a family with a combined annual household income of not more than R350 000 per annum (in the case of students with a disability the combined annual household income may not exceed R600 000 per annum)

WHAT DOES THE NSFAS BURSARY COVER?
Applicants who are approved for NSFAS funding are covered for the following:
  • Registration
  • Tuition​
Allowances for:
  • Food
  • Accommodation or transport
  • Learning material
  • Personal care

WHO QUALIFIES FOR THE BURSARY?

You qualify for an NSFAS bursary if you are a South African citizen who plans to study in 2021 or you are already studying at a public university or TVET college and you meet the following requirements:
  • SASSA grant recipients or
  • Your combined household income is not more than R350 000 per year or
  • A person with a disability with a combined household income of not more than R600 000 per year or
  • A student who begun their university studies before 2018 and their household income is not more than R122 000 per year

WHAT IS REQUIRED DURING THE APPLICATION PROCESS?

​NSFAS may need more information from you to process your application, check what supporting documents are required and ensure that you have all the relevant information.
You will need the following to complete your NSFAS application:
  • Your own cellphone number and email address
  • Copy of your ID or birth certificate
  • ID copies of parents, guardian or spouse
  • Your proof of income or 1 year’s IRP5 (if applicable)
  • Your parents, guardian or spouse’s proof of income
  • If you are a SASSA grant recipient, no proof of income will be required
  • Applicants with a disability must submit a completed and signed Disability Annexure A Form, click here to download
  • An applicant who is recognised as a Vulnerable Child by the Department of Social Development must provide a completed and signed Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form, click here to download.

HOW AND WHERE TO APPLY

You can apply online using a cellphone, tablet or computer. Follow these simple steps to apply:

Step 1: Go to www.nsfas.org.za and click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
Step 2: Create a myNSFAS account
Step 3: Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab and answer the questions on the screen
Step 4: Upload the required supporting documents then click on ‘submit

How to Register for NSFAS Online 2023

NSFAS Registration for application in 2022 consists of three ways. They are; Register on the NSFAS website, Register at your closest NYDA center and registration can also be done at a Financial Aid Office on campus or computer lab. Now let’s take them one-by-one

Registration on the NSFAS website: www.nsfas.org.za

If you want to register for NSFAS online 2022 on the NSFAS website, follow the steps outlined below:

  1. Crеаtе your mуNSFAS ассоunt
  2. Prоvіdе thе fоllоwіng details whеn you are rеgіѕtеrіng аn ассоunt: your username, раѕѕwоrd, your ID numbеr, your own сеllрhоnе numbеr аnd еmаіl address
  3. Thеn, lоgіn with уоur chosen uѕеrnаmе аnd раѕѕwоrd
  4. Clісk thе “Aррlу” buttоn to cоmрlеtе thе online аррlісаtіоn fоrm.
  5. Fill іn аll thе rеԛuіrеd information (dоn’t lеаvе аnу fіеldѕ blank)
  6. Uрlоаd еlесtrоnіс copies оf уоur supporting dосumеntѕ.
  7. Clісk thе “Submіt” buttоn tо rесеіvе your rеfеrеnсе number after уоur dосumеntѕ hаvе been uрlоаdеd

You can also register for your NSFAS Application 2022 at your closest NYDA center by following the procedures below:

  • Go to a NYDA сеntrе/оffісе сlоѕеѕt tо уоu
  • A NYDA сеntrе wоrkеr wіll therefore еxрlаіn thе аррlісаtіоn рrосеѕѕ аnd рrоvіdе уоu wіth аn аррlісаtіоn fоrm tо соmрlеtе. NSFAS Registration 2022-2023
  • Cоmрlеtе thе аррlісаtіоn fоrm іn CAPITAL lеttеrѕ wіth a blасk реn аnd ѕіgn іt іn thе аllосаtеd ѕроtѕ
  • Submit уоur аррlісаtіоn fоrm аnd ѕuрроrtіng dосumеntѕ.
  • Enѕurе thаt уоur ѕuрроrtіng dосumеntѕ аrе сеrtіfіеd оn the frоnt оf thе раgе аnd nоt be оldеr than 3 mоnthѕ.

Finally, at a Financial Aid Office on Campus or Computer Lab

You have to visit a Financial Aid Office on campus or computer lab to register for NSFAS 2022.

How to Re-register for NSFAS Online 2022

The following steps will help you to re-register for NSFAS 2022:

  1. Visit www.nsfas.org.za
  2. Then you Click myNSFAS tab
  3. After that you Click on “Register“
  4. You have to tick the box to allow NSFAS to confirm your details
  5. Then provide your ID number as it is stated on your ID document
  6. Enter your full names and surname on your ID document
  7. Enter your current email address
  8. Verify your email address
  9. Type in your cellphone number
  10. And then, you create a password
  11. Confirm password
  12. Upload all your ID copy
  13. Click on “Register“
  14. A One Time Pin (OTP) will be sent to the email and cellphone number provided (after 24 hours this OTP will expires)
  15. Enter the OTP and click on submit
  16. You just completed your Re-registration for NSFAS 2022
